Sunny Days
Art Monday Series
Post 7
Ahhh, those sunny days are my number one motivation in life. I’ll tell you my secret – even when the storm is raging outside (just like right now), I carry my sunshine inside me wherever I am in this moment. It has long become something of a ritual to tune myself into the best feelings in life, on the top of each day - and naturally, my most positive thoughts, memories and visions all have sunshine inside them. So much so, that when someone remarks on the weather, I often realise that I haven’t noticed that it was gloomy at all.
In the tiny corner of the world I am in – that patch of daylight floods my being with the warm, mellow sunshine – which, if it doesn’t come from heavens above, surely comes from the heavens within.
Aquarelle painting: Midday by Katarina Miletic
Light is a very important part of the artists’ life. Our studio spaces are always optimised to maximize the use of daylight, as the pigments, particularly in aquarelle (watercolour) painting – are applied to the paper in light washes and mixing colours, as well as seeing their true hue, helps in creating an accurate representation of what our eyes see. Though I have painted under daylight bulbs, there is a clear preference for natural light that nothing in this world can quite match in quality.
En plein air (in the open air) is another delicious experience for the body, soul and mind of an artist - lush in every way imaginable. Whether I am painting in London, or Belgrade, our gardens provide an invaluable space in which I love to create. And having artist friends and family around for a long weekend experience – always creates magic, fun and laughter – much more than just sitting and talking, when everyone is working on their own piece of art – the creative energy sparks humour, story telling and memory sharing. We grow together and appreciate having someone next to us, even when we concentrate on our creation. What is so interesting is that those who are with us in the group who don’t paint (not unlikely that they feel inspired occasionally to join and ask for a lesson from one of us), but even when they don’t – they enjoy the therapeutic observing of artists who are deeply involved in their creative flow.
Some of my favourite paintings have been painted outdoors, and those memories are so vivid, every time I see the image of my painting. The above painting of a garden table, titled Midday is one such example. And it’s fascinating that it goes further from holding that meaning for just me – the essence of that feeling is captured and projected onto it, so that the viewers always remark that this painting ‘reminds them of a summer day back when and when’…. and off we drift into another sunny day story.
