A Georgian Masterpiece

Basildon Park was not on our radar as we set off to celebrate our time together, in a rare day (besides family holiday times) where all three of us (my son, daughter and myself) could assemble together for an adventure in the English countryside that is in close proximity to London. The idea was that we spend the day outside, mostly out and about – have lunch and walk some more. We didn’t want a long drive, but just enough of it to enjoy both the time in and out.
We headed in the south west direction, aiming for the little places along the river Thames, before it enters London on its journey to the sea. Whilst exploring the area we had not visited before, we spotted the sign for Basildon Park, a National Trust property. Being members, we noted this in our memory and continued on for some time. We took a glorious walk by the river, enjoyed the still cold, but mellow sunshine, recharging batteries and talking occasionally, but rather focusing on being present for each other and in the nature together, without the need to fill the time with chatting. In the late afternoon, the thought of Basildon Park came back and we decided to pay it a visit.
I am quite partial when it comes to Georgian style, but this gem of a place has so much more to offer than architecture and history. Its story is one of survival against many odds, and its Palladian beauty painstakingly restored, and pieced together for over two decades - by their last owners (before the National Trust). My story today transcends facts and numbers, even names, for you can easily find this information if you are intrigued to learn more, or you feel inspired to visit it. Instead, I want to present you with the small collection of images that represent its triumph and appeal. We were so fortunate to have had a private tour, as an early season in the middle of the week, near to the closing hour proved to be the perfect combination for such experience. I also think the vibe of our day went like this as we set the intention for it from the beginning.
