Photoshoot Days
Style Saturday Series
Post 8
I was quite possibly born passionate about two things: driving and photography. And I am thrilled that both are big part of my daily life. Whilst I have always enjoyed recreational and documentary photography that followed us on our travels, day trips and specific outings dedicated to nothing but photography – this changed and morphed into my business, and it is one of the happiest aspects of being – holding the camera in my hands. Not a day in my life goes by without taking, editing and creating something with my photographs.
The Dark Room and Reel Film Days
It was actually my younger brother who studied photography, and although he taught me a lot by letting me assist him (dark room was an absolute favourite) – I am still a free spirit and when it comes to experimenting, I probably do most of that inside my photography. I absolutely refuse to take pictures for anyone else, but for my own sense of style and feel for light and dark and the composition, and I am really proud to be an amateur photographer. I have my heart in it and that to me matters more than perfect execution. I will break most rules if I look at the subject in a different way.
Funny fact is that during the long and difficult divorce phase of my life, I joined the photographic society (I wasn’t ready for yoga back then, so this was my interpretation), and stayed a member for over 10 years, making great friendships and meeting so many like-minded artists. That in itself is not funny, but we had so many talks by esteemed photographers who both showed us their recent work, or they gave us topical demonstrations – like it or not, I did learn some great things from them. The funny part is that we had competitions – digital and slide projections once every month, and also print competition once every month. These were judged by professional photographers, and I did surprise mostly myself by their kind comments and a few rewards I picked up along the way. The most often comment I got was ‘This is a really beautiful photograph and technically correct, but I just don’t see the point. It’s just not competitive photography.’– hehe, even though the point was the beauty – which they didn’t miss to see, but they often missed that was the point. They did always mark them well, though - in high teens always, and sometimes you’d get that brilliant 20 (which was the top mark) and feel like the cat that got the cream.
My Aesthetic View
When I paint and when I take photographs, I want people to see and almost feel the beauty of the world we live in through every detail. I’m passionately in love with life, and I want to share that passion through the beauty I see in all the details I capture in my photographs. And it is right, I am never competitive with others, but I am with myself from yesterday.
Today’s Challenges
My photo shoots (it’s amusing me that I will write it as I say it: photoshoot – always as one word when singular, and photo shoots – two words if plural) are challenged by space and light. If I am lucky enough to be able to set up in the garden (but that is always weather permitting in London), then it’s a day of fun. But if it’s raining, then both space and light become a huge obstacle to overcome. The reason being that I always have a vision what I want to achieve, but if this involves shooting in the darker corner of my tiny house – then you can imagine how creative one must get.
What’s Ahead
Much more lifestyle shots, but also more of architecture and trips to come in the second part of the year. Keep tuned in for those. And if you need help with your lifestyle product photography, or styled (house doctored) interior shoots, do get in touch to hire me. I am available for hourly, or commission work, depending on the size of your project.
For now, I think there have been enough words, I am going to have fun looking for the photos to share with you, that you might find interesting in illustrating what I have been talking about in this post. It’s much more fun looking at the photos, rather than talking about photography, don’t you think?
