Tiny Project - Big Change

As mentioned in one of the previous blog posts, I had planned to restore a beautiful wooden jewellery box, inherited from a dear old friend of mine. I did like it as it is, but not only did I not use it, I also didn’t make it a feature it deserves to be. Then the idea came at the precisely right moment.

365 Days to Dream project is in full swing, and one major project within it is our solid oak dining room table. Today’s adventure is just an overture. The little jewellery box will serve as a tester for one type of wood oil, while the nest of three tables will be another test for a different oil.

After extensive research I have narrowed down my choices of wood oil, according to the clear and almost matt (or very soft sheen) finish that I am after for the dining table. I will document everything and let you know how it turns out, but today I wanted to show you what a transformation this is already.

I am so in love with the wood grain of this little box. That was hard to see through layers of old varnish.

Today’s project took two hours of work to complete. I sanded it by hand, having disassembled some components, but not all, as I thought it wouldn’t be necessary and it would be hard to align some of them, so - for example - I elected not to remove the lid. I protected the inside silk lining from the dust by wrapping it cling film - and that seemed to work just fine!

Small surfaces are tricky somewhat (it’s easier to remove varnish from a sideboard than a tiny box like this), but once you get the hang of it, it does work like a dream.

The wood smells like rosewood, but I am not sure what it is. All I know is that it is beautiful. I will leave you with some photos and should you need any help or have any questions regarding furniture restoration projects, feel free to drop me a line. I have 20+ years of experience in this field and I’d be glad to get you to your quickest and least complicated result. In record time - every single time.

* * * * The Exclusive Update – 270 Days to Dream * * * *

1.
Since the above covers the 365 Days to Dream project, I just wanted to mention that the latest aquarelle painting is looking complete! I am so grateful for the idea, opportunity to work on it, and the result already achieved. Oh, Gosh. So, so pleased with the whole process - from drawing to painting every single detail on it. I cannot wait to show you how special it is. (How do I know?  Well, my family, who has followed my work for decades, have been coming up with comments like Incredible! and Perfect!) I just know that I have given it my all to every single brushstroke and pencil line. All of the love I have inside me has gone in creating this collection of paintings.

Gratitude has to be the main feeling of the day. Also reflecting back as this weekend is one sad memory for my family, plus a special birthday of a soul very dear and close to me. I have been so blessed to have these two in my life - in a big way. Blessing is even a small word for the feeling of gratitude to have experienced the real connection and the unconditional love - which ties us together like a thread through the eternity….

Tomorrow is a family day - I am really looking forward to spending it together and discussing further plans. Now that we are closer to the practical side of things, we are talking details and moving bulky things out of the way so that I have the space to manoeuvre. This is all fun stuff. I will document as I go along, but once I start making visible progress we can share and discuss photo updates.
