There is a reason I have talked about the value and the importance of individuality in yesterday’s post (you can read it here if you missed it). Your environment plays a huge part in the quality, influence and unfolding of your life story. If you are someone who is content in every area of your life, you can skip this post, my friend. However, if you wish to always improve, grow and shine your light even brighter, exploring all the possibilities and creating more joy for you and others - then you and I have a very interesting subject to explore here – from the style perspective.

To be clear, by your environment I mean people and surroundings. It is tremendously important to be within the same mindset, if you are to grow to your fullest potential in life. Similar to that, your immediate surroundings play equally crucial role in your progress, self-awareness and future success. (Let’s touch on success for a brief moment – success is only measured by how fulfilled you feel, and not anything else. I am always ever referring only to the deepest level of satisfaction with our personal journey and achievement when I say success.)

So, the pen of the story of your life is in your hand. It feels exciting, and I know I feel inspired to do my best. That always creates such positive ripple effect in life: by making yourself the best, happiest version of you (by paying attention and loving the being you are, as well as who you are becoming) – you also serve as an example to all. This is particularly important when you are a parent, as teaching by example is the sure way to lead your children to the successful and happy existence. And from whichever angle you want to look at it – the embodiment of all that you are doesn’t stop at your person, but carries on, and extends to things that you touch every day – your home and your daily work.

With a specific look at your home, which ought to be an extension of you, a picture and a reflection of who you are on the inside: when you look around you, at home, do you feel at peace? Because truth is, as much as you influence your surroundings, they also influence you – and if you neglect any aspect of yourself (your home is such one representation of you), you are introducing the imbalance, which eventually may turn into something you resent or dislike – and you really don’t want that. You don’t want to neglect any part of you that wants your attention, because, if you don’t change and improve it, the displeasing effect will only amplify with time.

Simple Solution

I am sure you have a personal style, a preference at least, when you dress yourself in the morning, or to go out to celebrate an occasion, or to be with those you love sharing your time with. Your home is no different. According to the activities you enjoy doing the most in your home, it will want to be presented to you as relaxing, cocooning, vibrant, calm, smart, casual, elegant, traditional, edgy, contemporary, ecological, quirky, chic, bohemian, country – or a combination of styles that best resonate with you. What I enjoy, by far the most, as an interior designer is to help people define their style when it comes to their home.

You can imagine that most people are finding this somewhat challenging, because they have put things together as an afterthought, picked up and influenced by a myriad of things thrown at them - and that is not how they go about dressing themselves - they actually pay attention. Knowing your style is knowing yourself. It might be a little different to style a room, or a home, but when you are guided by the principle of love (tuning into and finding what brings you the most joy), you can’t go wrong.

I agree, the elements have to be coherent, because noticeable harmony is what makes most of us happy and creates a stylish overall look. But what makes one style unique is the details. The story of the greatest design is in the relationship of all of its details. And I do not mean that details by themselves create a meaning, though they can portray a beautiful scene to observe. I mean those very personal details, like choice of material or colour, or the personal collections of art and treasured objects - that connect every piece of the design with you. That is the thread that makes a style yours.
