My home, my humble truth, and place where my journey unfolds at the most significant time of my life to date - it is about to become the star in its own right. Many people have commented that it is ‘small’ - and while it may indeed be on the petite side, it is purpose built and its rooms are quite nice. However, I burdened it with many things, as I successfully squeezed the contents of a spacious four bedroom house, plus a furniture business, into this one bedroom apartment.
Its very strong point is that I made a smart financial move and bought it as a sole owner, no loan of any kind. As I navigated my life through high seas, my home had endured several stages. Initially, it was meant to be a transitional abode while I look for something more permanent (I am leaning towards countryside, but my daughter is not a fan), whist my son is all for it, but moving away would mean we would be living further away from each other – that’s neither good nor bad thing, just a fact. It certainly wouldn’t impact on our closeness, or anything that really matters.
When we first moved in, I had a separate (paid) storage space, but at some point I did figure that those rates just kept going up, and up, and up, and I had to start sorting out what I need to keep, and what I don’t. Something had to change, but for a long time it didn’t because my full time job took all of my life energy away. Thing is, the stuff I have is 98% useful and/or valuable. I am just itching to start deciding whether I will get to use it, or I will let someone else have it. This year will see a lot of projects. I want to be actively enjoying hobbies I had, such as making quilts, fabric and silk painting, or else I will have to accept that holding on to these things doesn’t mean I will ever find time for them in the future. I used to do a lot of sewing projects when my children were little, and felt the greatest joy doing it. I need to find out if it still has the same appeal for me – otherwise, 10 or more boxes full of the highest quality linen and cotton (many antique fabrics) needn’t just sit in my possession forever and ever.
I think you may be starting to realise why the 365 Days to Dream challenge was created. It’s very much a mindful exercise in making myself take steps to unburden our home and our lives, and at the same time – to allow me room for the most creative home project of my life. It is and it will remain a multidimensional challenge, and I will not shy away from documenting and sharing the entire process with you, knowing that it can serve someone who is in a similar position as me, but still thinks that big dreams are not possible for single mothers, for self-employed artists, for no budget situations – for I will take all those cards and show you how to play a winning game with a hand exactly like that.
So far this little home has served us really well. It has hosted a small army of overseas visitors, as dearest friends and family have travelled to see us, London and England. It was never unmanageable and it has endured some transformations, which I have already shared with you in Style Saturday series (if you are new around here, my friend – take a peek at living room library wall post right here, or kitchen makeover here, or the all white bathroom creation here). I am both proud and happy of every moment and every blissful memory created along the way.
And while it might have been safe, comfortable, warm and bright space, on best days also elegant and homely, and certainly extraordinary in terms of being our haven and oasis of calm – it somehow didn’t reach its full potential of show-stopping and jaw-dropping amazing! So, it decided to promote itself – and it keeps upgrading itself every few years in our eyes. It just makes us bring our best to the game. Oh, this time round, I am so ready to play, because if my home has ideas about how stylish it can be – let me tell you – it doesn’t even dream what I have in mind for it….
P.S.
Tomorrow, my friend, I will share with you how you can follow this story and stay connected, and especially for those joining with their own challenges – I can’t wait – what a wave of positive energy we are creating!
